January 15- Fairytale Parade
Students dress up as a fairytale/folktale character. They are allowed to bring a change of clothes for after the parade!
Parents, if you would like to join us, start lining the halls at 8:50, we should begin parading around at 9:00!
HOMEWORK
Look for books in the book bags today. These books are great to read several times for “just right” practice. Students may need some support reading these books but should be able to read mostly independently. Ask questions about the book and have your child retell the story. Look for a reading practice page in the Tuesday folder. This page will focus readers on answering questions. Look for math homework in the Tuesday folder. (Both homework pages are two sided.)
BOOK DRIVE
Our Book Drive was a great success! We collected over 1,000 books to donate to Palm Elementary. Mrs. Amiri and I joined Caraway Cares to deliver the books last Friday. The kids and teachers were so grateful and appreciative. Thank you for all your donations! The students counted, sorted and graphed all the books as a first grade team. The kids had a fun, learning experience that helped others as well. We will do one more PBL project this spring.
READING
This week in reading we will continue reading Folktales, Fairytales and Fables. We will review the features and discuss the characters, the problem and the solution, the plot of the story. We will also review how to retell (tell the events from the beginning to the end in our own words) and to summarize (tell the important events in one short paragraph).
WRITING
In writing, we will start writing expository texts. We will make a list of things that we are expert at and know a lot and choose from our list to write about a topic. Our main purpose is to teach and inform others.
MATH
This week in math we will review place value in 2-digit numbers. We will work with tens and ones and compare 2-digit numbers. When comparing the two digit numbers, we will look at the digits in tens place first. If those are the same, then we will move to the digits in ones place. We will also work on math problem solving that involves representing, comparing, adding and subtracting 2-digit numbers.
SCIENCE
We will review some of the science and social studies concepts from the first semester such as weather and cultures and celebrations.
THANK YOU!
