This week in Reading and Writing Workshop...
We will continue our learning about nonfiction text. We know Readers read to learn! Writers can also write to teach readers something they know a lot about! We will examine the features of nonfiction and create a list of ways readers use these features. We will read nonfiction books about spiders this week, and we will write facts we have learn as we read.
This week in Math workshop...
This week we review collecting data and graphing. We will also start learning about Subtraction and Doubles. We will explore what subtraction means by acting out subtraction stories and using manipulatives. Also in this unit, the students will begin thinking about how addition and subtraction are connected.
This week in Science...
We will be exploring patterns of movement! The students always love this unit! We will learn all about the many different ways objects can move. We will demonstrate, observe and record as we learn.
This week in Social Studies...
We will learn about culture. We will discuss the many diverse cultures that are represented in our classroom. We will also discuss family traditions and customs from these different cultures.
Our Life Skill of the week is Responsibility! Responsibility is knowing when it is appropriate to respond, taking care of your obligations, and holding yourself accountable for your own actions.
Report Card Information...
We have had a busy and productive first nine weeks. The following includes information about report card grades…
If your child receives a 1 in any area, they would benefit from additional practice of that skill at home as well as at school. At this time they need “direct guidance” with that skill. Many concepts have recently been introduced and more time may be needed to master that skill. A 2 on the report card indicates that the student is making progress toward end of year expectations and needs “minimal guidance”. A 2 is good at this time. A 3 means the student “exhibits mastery” for end of year goals. The rubric also states that students show consistency in each skill for a grade of 3. For the first grading period I have not had the opportunity to observe consistency in most areas. Each section (box) also encompasses many skills, while students may be meeting end of year expectations for one skill, I may not have introduced and/or assessed each skill for that section. Our goal is for each child to reach a level 3 in most sections of the report card. (Please see the report card envelope for more information.) If the student receives a 4, they are exceeding end of the year expectations and working above grade level.
Please refer to the report card envelope for promotion standards.
Please sign the report card envelope and return the envelope to school. You may keep the white print out.
Have a great week!
