HOMEWORK
For Reading this week visit RAZ kids. Please go to https://www.raz-kids.com/ --- go to kids login, green box--- enter teacher username, tbyrne9--- go to your child's name---then enter student password, your child's birthday in number form, for example 01012008. After reading the book students should answer comprehension questions as well as reflect on the text. Skills we are working on in groups include (but not limited to)... summarizing (retell the sequence of events, understand important ideas, understand the problem and solution), predicting (using background knowledge to understand what might happen next), making connections (think of experiences, books and other learning related to the text), synthesizing (differentiating between what was known and new information, expressing a change in ideas after reading the text), Inferring (understand characters, their feelings, and cause and effect based on evidence in the text).
Look for your math practice in the Tuesday folder. (This is review, students should be able to complete with little or no support...don't forget to read the directions with your child!)
READING and WRITING
This week we will begin a new genre, Poetry. We will learn about the features of poetry. Poems have short lines with no punctuation most of the time. There are repeating words or phrases in poetry. Poems sometimes rhyme and sometimes they do not. Poems have rhythm, some are songs and some can be silly and funny. We will think about how poets see the world in a different, fresh and unusual way. The students will make inferences as a strategy to comprehend the poem. We will also discover sensory language in poetry and understand that sensory images help us visualize the poem and make it more interesting for readers. In writing we will “See with Poets’ Eyes” as we begin writing about ordinary objects in different ways. We will learn that poems are big thoughts in little packages.
MATH
This week we will start learning about geometry. We will identify two-dimensional shapes, including circles, triangles, rectangles, and squares as special rectangles, rhombuses, and hexagons, and describe their attributes/characteristics (sides, vertices, curves). We will also construct two-dimensional shapes with different manipulatives and materials.
SOCIAL STUDIES
This week in social studies we will continue learning about physical characteristics of places. We will learn about bodies of water and the characteristics of each such as river, lake and ocean. We will identify natural resources in our community, state and nation and ways they are used. We will also identify how human characteristics of places such as food, shelter, and clothing depends on geographic location of those places.
THANK YOU!
